Most species have long, thin bodies. Some look like short pencil stubs. Most have one to five dark stripes. These stripes often have shiny gold or silver colors. Many fish also have red or orange fins.

One fish, called N. espei, is very special. It has dark spots instead of stripes. Most fish swim straight. But two types swim with their noses up.

Many people keep these fish in home tanks. They like soft water and many plants. It is best to keep them in groups of six or more. Some fish might jump out of the tank. Floating plants can help stop this. You can tell if a fish is male by its fins. In many species, the male has a larger or brighter fin.

These fish are hardy. They can live for five years or more if they are well cared for. They like to eat small foods like brine shrimp and algae.
