Male and female guppies look very different. This is called sexual dimorphism. Males have bright colors and fancy fins. Females are usually grey. The colors in males come from thyroid hormones. These are parts of the body that help control how a fish grows and acts.

In the wild, they often swim in groups. This is called shoaling. It helps them find food more easily. It also helps them stay safe from predators.

Predators like big fish or birds hunt guppies. To stay safe, guppies use clever tricks. When a predator is near, a guppy's eye turns black. This draws the predator toward the head. This helps the fish turn away quickly.

Guppies are also very good parents. They give birth to live young. The babies can swim and eat on their own right away.
