These trees are native to the Southern United States and Mexico. They grow best in hot and humid places. They also need lots of water.

The pecan is not actually a true nut. It is a drupe. A drupe is a fruit with one hard pit inside. This pit is surrounded by a husk.

The husk starts out green. As it grows, it turns brown. Then, the husk splits into four parts. This lets the seed fall out.

People love to eat the seeds. They have a buttery flavor. You can eat them as a snack.

You can also use them in treats. People make pecan pie and praline candy. Some people even use the wood for furniture. They also use the wood to smoke meat. This gives the food a sweet flavor. Many states in the U.S. use the pecan as their state nut.
