The pecan tree is a huge and important part of nature. It is a large deciduous tree, which means it loses its leaves each year. These trees can grow to be 130 feet tall. They often have a wide spread of about 60 feet. The trunk can even grow to be 3 feet wide.

Pecans are native to the Mississippi River region. This includes the southern United States and northern Mexico. They grow best in hot and humid summers. These trees also need plenty of water to grow well.

Learning how a pecan grows is very interesting. The fruit is actually a drupe, not a true nut. A drupe is a fruit with a single pit inside. The fruit has a thick outer husk that starts out green. As the fruit matures, the husk turns brown. Then, the husk splits into four sections. This allows the thin-shelled seed to fall out.

This way of spreading seeds happened a long time ago. The tree changed from using wind to using animals to move its seeds.

People have known about pecans for a very long time. Native Americans knew them as a special treat. They may have even helped the trees spread by planting them. Commercial growing in the United States did not start until the 1880s. In 1927, a group called the National Pecan Growers Association made a rule. They decided the official way to say the name is "pea-con."

Today, pecans are grown in many different places. The United States produces a huge amount every year. Most of these come from Georgia, New Mexico, and Texas. In 2017, Mexico produced nearly half of the world's pecans. South Africa is also a large producer today.

Many U.S. states love the pecan. Alabama, Arkansas, California, Louisiana, and Texas all call it their state nut. Texas even calls it its state tree.

We use pecans in many tasty ways every day. The seeds have a rich and buttery flavor. You can eat them as a simple snack. People also use them to make pecan pie or praline candy. You might even find them in cookies or ice cream. Some people use the wood to make furniture or floors. The wood can also be used to smoke meat. This gives the food a sweet and nutty taste.
