Sir Paul Godwin Scoon was an important leader in Grenada. He was born on July 4, 1935, in a town called Gouyave.

He went to school at St. John's Anglican School and the Grenada Boys' Secondary School. Later, he studied at the University of London and the University of Leeds in England. He also earned a degree from the University of Toronto in Canada. Paul returned home to teach at his old school. He worked his way up to become the Secretary to the Cabinet. This role meant he led the Civil Service in Grenada.

In 1978, Queen Elizabeth II appointed him as the Governor-General. This job meant he represented the Queen in Grenada.

In 1979, a group called the New Jewel Movement took control. They were led by Maurice Bishop. This group included people who used to be Paul's students. They arrested Paul at first, but they let him go quickly. They apologized to him for the arrest. The new leaders wanted to keep the Queen's role in the country. They kept Paul in his job to help the nation stay steady. Paul and Maurice Bishop even played tennis together.

Things became very difficult for the island in 1983. A man named Bernard Coard led a group to take power. This group was different from the one led by Maurice Bishop. On October 12, 1983, Bishop was removed from power. On October 19, Bishop and three ministers were killed by soldiers. A military council led by Hudson Austin took control. They declared martial law. This meant the military had strict control over the people. Paul wanted peace to return to the island.

Paul used secret ways to ask for help. He asked the United States and other Caribbean nations to step in. This led to an invasion called Operation Urgent Fury. It began on October 25, 1983. United States Navy SEALs were sent to free Paul. They arrived in a Blackhawk helicopter. The SEALs were trapped at his home in St. George's. Later, Marines arrived to rescue Paul and the SEALs.

After the invasion, Paul helped the country find new leaders. He served as the interim head of government. He stayed in his role until 1992.

Later in his life, Paul wrote a book. It was called Survival for Service. The book told the story of his time as Governor-General. In the book, he said he did not write a specific letter. This letter was used to show why the invasion happened. He did say he asked for help from other lands. Paul died on September 2, 2013. He had lived a very long life. His story shows how leaders work through hard times.
