The passenger pigeon was a bird in North America.

They were once the most common birds in North America. Some scientists think there were up to 5 billion of them! They lived in large groups and flew in huge flocks.

These birds flew very fast to find food and shelter. They liked to eat fruit and nuts, which are called mast.

Male and female birds looked different. This is called sexual dimorphism. The males had bright, shiny feathers on their necks. The females were smaller and a duller brown color.

Sadly, these birds are now extinct. This means they no longer live on Earth. People hunted them for meat on a massive scale. This happened a lot in the 1800s. Other things helped cause their decline too. Large forests were cut down, which destroyed their homes. The birds needed big groups to stay safe and breed. As their numbers dropped, it became harder for them to survive. The last bird, named Martha, died in 1914.
