It took much more work to sort them out. In 1827, William Swainson moved them to their own group called Ectopistes. This name means "moving about" or "wandering." This matches their habit of traveling long distances.

Sadly, the birds disappeared quickly during the 1800s. Native Americans hunted them, but hunting grew much larger after Europeans arrived.

People hunted them on a massive scale for cheap meat. At the same time, many forests were cut down. This destroyed the places where they lived and bred. The population dropped slowly until 1870, then fell very fast. The last wild bird was shot in 1902 in Laurel, Indiana.

This was followed by a rapid, steep decline between 1870 and 1890. The last confirmed wild bird was shot in Laurel, Indiana, in 1902.

The species finally vanished in the early 20th century. The last captive birds were divided into three groups around the turn of the century. Martha, who is believed to be the very last passenger pigeon, died at the Cincinnati Zoo. Her death occurred on September 1, 1914.
