The great auk was a large bird that lived in the North Atlantic.

It had a black back and a white belly. Its beak was heavy and hooked. The bird could not fly because its wings were too small. Instead, it was a powerful swimmer. It used its strength to hunt for fish and small sea creatures.

Great auks lived in large groups on rocky islands. They mated for life. Each pair laid just one egg on the bare rock.

Both parents helped keep the egg warm for six weeks. After the egg hatched, the parents cared for the young for a few more weeks.

Sadly, the great auk is now extinct. This means there are none left alive. People hunted them for food and fishing bait. They also wanted the birds' soft down for clothes. Collectors also wanted their skins and eggs. These things made the birds very rare. The last two known birds were killed on an island near Iceland in 1844. Even though new laws were made to help, it was too late. The great auk is the only British bird lost in modern times.
