Plutarch did not just want to tell history. He wanted to study people. He looked at how a person's character shaped their life. He paired famous Greeks with famous Romans. He put them side by side to compare them. For example, he paired Alexander the Great with Julius Caesar. He wanted readers to see if they shared good or bad traits. Most of these pairs have 23 stories left today. Some stories are about just one person. Plutarch used old papers to find his facts. He knew that truth can be hard to find. Time can hide the truth of the past. These books became very popular in Europe. Many famous writers used his stories for their own work. Even the composer Beethoven liked them. He said the books helped him face hard times. People still study these lives to learn about the human soul.
