Jesus used many short stories to teach people. These stories are called parables.

A parable is often like an extended simile or a long metaphor. This means it uses a simple picture to explain a deeper reality. Many people think these stories are not just for fun. They believe the stories use the visible world to show the spiritual world.

For example, a story about a seed can explain a big idea. This makes the lessons easy to remember. They help people think about things like love and prayer.

These stories work by using things from everyday life. Jesus used very common examples to reach his listeners.

Some stories talk about a person being mugged by a roadside. These simple scenes help explain major religious themes. They might teach about the growth of the Kingdom of God. They can also show how important it is to be kind.

People have studied these parables for a very long time. The use of parables was a natural way to teach in Jesus's time.

Many Jews were already used to learning through stories and riddles. Some scholars say these parables are like dreams from the Old Testament. These dreams were meant to help people search for meaning. Because of this, the stories have been taught since the very start of Christianity. They have become some of the most famous stories in the world.

We find most of these stories in the New Testament. The three Synoptic Gospels contain the most parables.

The Gospel of Luke has the most with 24 parables. The Gospel of Matthew has 23 parables. The Gospel of Mark has 8 parables. Some scholars say there are as many as 60 if you count short sayings. Other books like the Gospel of Thomas also have parables. This book includes stories like the Parable of the Empty Jar.

Many different themes link these stories together. Some parables work in groups to show a single idea.

The stories of the Lost Sheep and the Lost Coin are a pair. They both deal with the idea of finding something that was lost. Other stories, like the Mustard Seed, talk about things growing from small starts. Some stories focus on waiting or being ready for a big day. These themes help people connect the stories to their own lives.
