A parable is a short story used to teach a lesson. These stories are often written in prose or verse. They help explain a principle or a way to live. A parable is different from a fable. Fables use animals, plants, or even objects as characters. Parables always use human characters instead.

This makes the stories feel more relatable to people. A parable acts like a metaphorical analogy. It uses a simple story to show a bigger truth.

How does a parable work? It usually follows a simple pattern. The story sketches a setting and describes an action. Then, it shows the results of that action.

Often, a character faces a moral dilemma. They might make a bad decision and face the consequences. The meaning is usually straightforward and not a secret. It uses concrete stories to explain abstract or hard ideas. This helps people talk about complex thoughts more easily.

Many famous parables come from history and religion. The Bible contains many stories told by Jesus. Some of his famous tales are the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son.

Some scholars believe these were inspired by Hebrew comparisons called mashalim. These were common during the Talmudic period from the 2nd to 6th centuries CE. Parables also appear in the Quran. For example, the Quran tells stories of a good and evil tree. The Sufi tradition also uses parables to teach values.

There are many specific names and examples to know. In the Old Testament, Nathan told the parable of the ewe-lamb. There is also the parable of the woman of Tekoah.

A 19th-century writer named George Fyler Townsend wrote about their meanings. Later, a scholar named Adolf Jülicher had new ideas about them. He thought they were like extended metaphors with three parts. He called these the picture part, the reality part, and a third part for comparison. Even modern writers like Idries Shah have used these stories.

Parables are closely related to other ways of speaking. They are like metaphors because they use real things to show ideas. They are also similar to similes. A simile says one thing is "like" another thing. However, the meaning in a parable is implicit rather than stated directly.

Some people see them as a way to make people think. By watching a character, a listener can make their own judgment. This helps people see how a lesson might apply to their own lives.
