Some sicknesses stay in one place. But a pandemic goes to many countries. A long time ago, the Black Death was a pandemic. It made many people in Europe very sick.

We can work together to stay safe. People can wash their hands often. We can also stay apart from others. This helps stop the sickness from spreading. Scientists also make medicine to help us.

More recently, we have seen the HIV/AIDS pandemic. We also saw the 2009 swine flu pandemic. Most recently, the world dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many groups work hard to prepare for these events. The World Health Organization (WHO) helps countries work together. In September 2021, the WHO opened a Pandemic Hub in Berlin. This hub uses artificial intelligence to look at 35,000 data feeds.

They want to find new health threats early. In May 2023, they also launched the International Pathogen Surveillance Network. This network helps countries share samples of harmful germs. In the United States, the NIAID has a plan to find viruses of concern. Other groups like CEPI want to make new vaccines in only 100 days. This would be much faster than it was for COVID-19.

We can think of pandemic work like a shield for the world. Prevention is like building the shield before a fight. This includes making vaccines and watching for new germs. Preparedness is like getting your tools ready just in case. This involves storing medical supplies and planning how to use them. Even simple things like cleaning surfaces help. Good air filters in buildings also help stop germs in the air. When a pandemic ends, the disease might become endemic. This means it stays in the world at a low, steady level. Examples of this are seasonal flu and polio.

Global organizations work constantly on prevention and preparedness. Prevention includes research into vaccines and monitoring pathogens.
