Germs can jump in many ways. You might get sick from a bite or saliva. This happens with rabies. Some germs spread through the air. Others come from eating bad food or water. For example, salmonellosis comes from germs in food.

Many animals carry these germs. Rodents like rats can spread sickness through droppings. Birds can also spread germs. Even pets like cats and dogs can pass germs to humans. Cats can pass a sickness called toxoplasmosis.

Many things make these jumps more likely. People moving into wild animal homes can help germs spread. Changes in our weather also matter. Using more land for big farms can increase the risk too. We can stay safe by being clean. Good waste management helps keep us healthy.

Many of our illnesses started this way. In fact, about 60% of known human infectious diseases are zoonotic. Even more striking, up to 75% of new emerging diseases come from animals. This makes understanding these jumps very important for our health.

There are many ways these germs move from one living thing to another. In a direct zoonosis, the germ passes straight from an animal to a person. This might happen through the air, like with influenza viruses. It can also happen through bites or saliva, which is how rabies spreads. Some people get sick by eating food or drinking water that is not clean. For example, salmonellosis comes from bacteria in food. Other germs, called vectors, use insects like mosquitoes or ticks to travel.

Scientists have studied how these diseases appear for a long time. We know that HIV was a zoonotic disease that moved to humans in the early 20th century. It has since changed into a disease that only lives in humans. We also saw the 2009 swine flu pandemic caused by flu viruses. These happened when animal flu strains mixed with human strains. This mixing is called recombination, where two different germs combine to make a new one.

Many different animals can carry these germs in their bodies. Rodents like rats are common in cities and can spread sickness through droppings or bites. Birds can also spread germs, such as through pigeon droppings that people breathe in. Even our pets can be part of this. Cats can pass a sickness called toxoplasmosis to people. Dogs and cats are often vaccinated to protect them and us from rabies. Some people even get sick from pet lizards like the leopard gecko.

Human actions can make these jumps happen more often. When people move into wild animal habitats, they meet more species. This is called encroachment. Using land for big farms or trading wildlife also increases the risk. Changes in our weather, or climate change, can move insects to new places. A report from the United Nations Environment Programme says industrial farming is a big risk. We can help by using a "One Health" approach. This means looking at the health of people, animals, and the environment all together.

There are many different types of pathogens that cause these diseases. Bacteria like Salmonella or Escherichia coli O157:H7 are common causes of foodborne illness. Viruses can also be the culprit, such as the Ebola virus or the Hepatitis E virus. Hepatitis E is often transmitted through pork products in areas with limited sanitation. Parasites are another major group, including Toxoplasma gondii, which is often found in undercooked meat. Even fungi can be zoonotic, such as those found in pigeon droppings that people might inhale.

Scientists have tracked how these diseases emerge and evolve over time. For example, HIV was a zoonotic disease that moved to humans in the early 20th century. It has since evolved into a disease that exists only in humans. We also see this with influenza. Avian and swine influenza viruses have high zoonotic potential. Sometimes, these animal strains undergo recombination with human flu strains. This process creates new viruses, which can lead to pandemics like the 2009 swine flu.

Zoonotic diseases represent a massive portion of human illness. It is estimated that 60% of all known human infectious diseases are zoonotic. Even more significantly, up to 75% of all emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic in origin. Out of 1,415 known pathogens that infect humans, 61% are zoonotic. These numbers show how closely our health is tied to the animal kingdom. The risk of new diseases appearing is often linked to how many different species live in one area.

Many different environments and activities increase the risk of a spillover event. A spillover occurs when a pathogen moves from an animal reservoir to a human population. Human encroachment into wildlife habitats, such as through deforestation, makes this more likely. Urbanization also plays a role by bringing humans closer to urban wildlife like rodents, bats, and raccoons. Rodents are particularly important reservoirs in cities. They can spread diseases like leptospirosis or hantavirus through bites, scratches, or contact with their urine and droppings.

Human society and industry also influence how these diseases spread. The wildlife trade can increase risk by forcing many different species into small, crowded spaces. This allows pathogens to mix and jump between species more easily. Industrial farming, especially of pigs and chickens, is also considered a primary risk factor. Additionally, climate change alters the distribution of vectors like mosquitoes, changing how diseases move. To fight this, experts suggest a "One Health" approach. This strategy integrates human, animal, and environmental health to manage risks more effectively.
