Pāṇini

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Panini was a great scholar from ancient India. He lived a long time ago. Some experts think he lived around 400 BCE. He is famous for a book called the Ashtadhyayi. This book is a guide to the Sanskrit language.

Panini used almost 4,000 short rules. These rules are called sutras. They help people build words and sentences correctly. His work helped make Classical Sanskrit a standard language. This kept the language from changing too much over time.

Panini's way of thinking was very advanced. Some people call him the father of linguistics. Linguistics is the study of how language works. His ideas even helped people who study computers today.

Legends tell wonderful stories about him. One story says he went to the mountains. There, the god Shiva played a small drum. The sounds from the drum gave Panini his rules.

Panini's work is still studied by many people. It helped shape how we understand words today.
