Ovarian cancer is a serious sickness caused by a tumor in an ovary.

This tumor can start inside the ovary itself. It can also start in nearby parts like the fallopian tubes. It may even begin in the inner lining of the abdomen. The ovary is made of three different kinds of cells. These include epithelial cells, germ cells, and stromal cells. When these cells become abnormal, they divide too much. This causes a tumor to form. These cells can also spread to other parts of the body.

Finding this sickness can be a hard job. Early on, there may be no symptoms at all. Some women only feel vague changes in their bodies. As the cancer grows, symptoms become easier to notice. A person might feel bloated or have a swollen belly. Other signs include pelvic pain, constipation, or a loss of appetite. The cancer can spread to the lungs or the liver. It can also move to the lymph nodes or the abdominal lining.

Scientists and doctors have studied many ways this happens. They know that age is a major factor for risk. Most cases happen after menopause, which is when monthly cycles stop. Women who have ovulated more often may have a higher risk. This includes women who never had children. It also includes those who started ovulation at a young age. Some people also have a higher risk because of their genes.

There are many important facts about this disease. About 10% of cases come from inherited genetic risks. People with mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes have a high risk. For example, BRCA1 mutations can lead to a 15% to 45% lifetime risk. In 2020, about 313,000 new cases occurred globally. In the United States, the five-year survival rate is 52%. In 2019, there were 13,445 deaths from this cancer in the U.S.

Understanding these facts helps people stay healthy. Knowing about risk factors like obesity or hormone therapy is helpful. Some things, like breastfeeding or pregnancy, can actually lower the risk. Doctors can use surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy to treat the disease. If it is caught in an early stage, it is often curable. This is why learning about the signs is so important.
