Otto loved to study how people use language. He went to the University of Copenhagen. He studied many things like law and French. Later, he became a professor of English. He was very good at speaking English.

Otto wanted to change how we teach languages. Many teachers used old ways. They focused on rules and writing. Otto thought this was not the best way. He believed students should listen first. He wanted them to hear sounds and repeat them. This is called the direct method.

He also worked with sounds. He helped create a way to write sounds. This is called a phonetic script. He even suggested a special alphabet for all languages. This idea helped start a global group. Otto wrote many books to help students. His work changed how the world learns to speak and write.
