Ostracoderm

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Ostracoderms were a special group of armored, jawless fish. They lived a very long time ago during the Paleozoic Era. The name ostracoderm means "shell-skinned" in Greek.

These animals were not all part of one single family tree. Instead, scientists use the name to group many different armored fish together. They were very important in the history of life on Earth.

These fish had a very interesting way of eating and breathing. They did not have jaws to bite or chew their food. Instead, they used a muscular pharynx, which is a part of the throat. This worked like a suction pump to pull in small, slow prey.

They also used gills in a new way. Earlier creatures used gills to both eat and breathe. Ostracoderms used their gills only for respiration, which is the way they took in oxygen. Their gill pouches stayed open on the sides of their heads.

A scientist named Louis Agassiz first studied these fossils in the 1830s. He found bony armored fish fossils from Scotland. At first, he thought they might be like catfish or sturgeon.

However, he soon saw they had no movable jaws. In 1844, he gave them the name ostracoderms. He noticed their heads looked like they were made of tiny, tooth-like structures.

There were many different kinds of these fish. The cephalaspids had strong head shields to protect their organs.

The galeaspids had massive bone shields and lived in places like China and Vietnam. Some lived in the Silurian and Devonian periods, which were 430 to 370 million years ago.

Other fish, called thelodonts, had small, spiny scales instead of big plates. These tiny scales are very common in fossils today.

Ostracoderms are a link to the fish we see in the ocean today. Some groups, like the osteostracans, lived in North America and Europe.

They had special parts in their inner ears. These fish lived alongside the first fish with jaws. Most ostracoderms went extinct at the end of the Devonian period. This happened after they lived with jawed fish for about 30 million years.
