Long ago, armored fish lived in the water. We call this group ostracoderms. The name means "shell-skinned." 

Some ostracoderms had very large head shields. These shields protected their heads and gills. One group was called cephalaspids. They were well armored. Another group was the galeaspids. They had massive bone shields on their heads. 
Ostracoderms were a special group of armored, jawless fish. They lived a very long time ago during the Paleozoic Era. The name ostracoderm means "shell-skinned" in Greek. 

These fish had a very interesting way of eating and breathing. They did not have jaws to bite or chew their food. Instead, they used a muscular pharynx, which is a part of the throat. This worked like a suction pump to pull in small, slow prey. 
A scientist named Louis Agassiz first studied these fossils in the 1830s. He found bony armored fish fossils from Scotland. At first, he thought they might be like catfish or sturgeon. 
There were many different kinds of these fish. The cephalaspids had strong head shields to protect their organs. 
Ostracoderms are a link to the fish we see in the ocean today. Some groups, like the osteostracans, lived in North America and Europe.

Other groups showed even more variety in their anatomy. The Osteostraci lived in North America, Europe, and Russia. They were among the most advanced jawless fish. They possessed paired pectoral fins and a complex cranial anatomy. Their skin had a dermal skeleton with three distinct layers. These layers included a basal layer of isopedin, a middle layer of spongy bone, and a superficial layer of dentin. 
Some ostracoderms were much smaller and less heavily armored. The Thelodonti, meaning "feeble-teeth," were covered in small, spiny scales. These scales were very resilient. Because of this, they are the most common vertebrate fossils from their time. 
The evolutionary timeline of these animals is quite long. Jawed fish, such as sharks and placoderms, appeared about 420 million years ago. For about 30 million years, ostracoderms and jawed fish coexisted. Most ostracoderm species eventually declined and became extinct at the end of the Devonian period. Recent research suggests that the appearance of jawed fish was not the main cause of their extinction. Instead, environmental upheaval during the Late Devonian likely played a larger role. This period marked the end for most of these ancient, armored pioneers.
