This fish did not have a jaw. It likely used a way of eating called filter-feeding. This means it took in tiny bits of food from the water. Its body was covered in armor for protection. It had rows of knobbly scutes. Scutes are hard, bony plates. The head and front of the body had hard plates too. These plates had holes for its eyes and nostrils. The gills also had openings in these plates.

Scientists found the remains of this fish in 1959. They found them in the Stairway Sandstone. This place is near Alice Springs in Australia. At first, people did not know how old the fish was. They did not realize it was an ancient vertebrate right away. It was not until the late 1960s that they figured it out. This discovery helped us learn about very early life.

There are two species in this genus. One is named A. prionotolepis. The other is called A. sp. The name Arandaspis comes from a local group of people. These are the Aranda people. They are also called the Arrernte. This name honors the Indigenous Australian people of that area.

We still have many questions about how this fish looked. We do not know the exact shape of its trunk. We also do not know the shape of its tail. Some other early fish had no paired fins. Their tails were very simple. Other similar fish had tails with webs. We use what we know about other fish to guess. This helps us picture how life began in the sea.
