Galeaspida were a group of ancient, jawless fish. Their name comes from Latin words meaning "helmet shields."

This name describes the large bone shield on their heads. These creatures lived in shallow marine and freshwater environments. They lived a very long time ago. This was during the Silurian and Devonian periods. These times were between 430 and 370 million years ago.

These fish had a very interesting way of breathing. They had a large opening on the top of their head shield.

This opening connected to their throat and gill chamber. It worked like a single nostril and a water intake device. Water flowed through this hole to help them breathe and smell. Some species had a huge number of gills. Members of the order Polybranchiaspidida could have up to 45 gill openings.

Scientists have studied these fossils to learn about their history. Earlier studies showed they were closely related to a group called Osteostraci. This was based on how similar their braincases looked.

In 2022, researchers described a species named Tujiaaspis vividus from China. This fish lived during the Silurian period. It showed a way of body shape that was a precursor to later fish. This means it was an early step toward having paired fins.

There are many different kinds of galeaspids in the fossil record. Scientists have described over 76 species in at least 53 genera.

They lived in areas that are now Southern China, Tibet, and Vietnam. The oldest ones, like Hanyangaspis and Dayongaspis, appeared about 436 million years ago. Some groups, like the Eugaleaspids, lived for a long time. Others, like the Geraspididae, appeared during the middle of the Telychian age. The very last galeaspid lived during the Late Devonian epoch.

Most galeaspids lived on the bottom of the water. Their bodies were flat, and their mouths were on their undersides.

They did not have side fins like many fish today. Instead, they mostly only had a tail fin for moving. Their bodies were covered in tiny scales in rows. Some types had head shields with long, slender parts. Others had shields shaped like a horseshoe. These different shapes helped them fit into their watery homes.
