Many people think he was one of the greatest jazz players ever. He was known by many special names. The great Duke Ellington called him the "Maharaja of the keyboard." His friends often just called him "O.P." In the jazz world, people called him "the King of inside swing." He spent over 60 years playing music for people all over the world.

Peterson's music came from many different places. He grew up in a neighborhood called Little Burgundy in Montreal, Canada. His parents moved there from the West Indies. His father was an amateur musician who played the organ, trumpet, and piano. Peterson started playing the trumpet and piano when he was only five years old. A sickness called tuberculosis stopped him from playing the trumpet when he was seven. Because of this, he put all his focus into the piano.

To become a master, Peterson worked very hard every single day. He practiced his scales and classical music for four to six hours daily. His sister, Daisy, taught him classical piano. He also studied with a pianist named Paul de Marky. This training helped him learn the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Peterson loved jazz and boogie-woogie music too. People even called him "the Brown Bomber of the Boogie-Woogie." By the age of nine, he played with great control. This skill impressed many professional musicians who heard him play.

He won a national music competition in 1940 when he was fourteen. After that, he became a professional musician playing in hotels and on the radio.

Peterson played in many different groups throughout his long career. He often played in a trio, which is a group of three musicians. He felt his trio with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis was his most productive group. This trio played together from 1953 to 1958. He also worked with other famous musicians like Joe Pass and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. In the 1970s, his trio with Pass and Pedersen won a Grammy Award.

He also performed with the famous singer Ella Fitzgerald. Peterson was happy to work with a manager named Norman Granz. Granz helped protect Peterson and other Black musicians during hard times in the United States. Peterson's career included many solo recordings and many different types of musical groups.

Throughout his life, Peterson earned many important honors. He won eight Grammy Awards between 1975 and 1997. He also received a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy.

Even when his health changed, he kept making music. In 1993, a stroke made it hard for him to use his left side. This meant he had to rely mostly on his right hand to play. Even so, his friend Bob Rae said his playing was still amazing. He continued to tour in Europe and the United States for many years. He died in 2007 in Mississauga, Ontario, after a long life of music.

If you listen to jazz, you might hear the influence of Peterson's style. He was inspired by many great players like Art Tatum and Nat King Cole. He even used parts of music written by Sergei Rachmaninoff in his own songs. Peterson believed that studying classical music was very important for all serious pianists. He taught many students how to play and how to improvise. Improvisation is when a musician makes up music as they play. His hard work and many hours of practice helped him change the world of jazz forever.
