As a young boy, Oscar lived in many different houses. He once saw Queen Victoria riding her horse near his window. He studied very hard to get into a famous school called Eton. He finally became a student there in January 1851.

Life at Eton was not always easy for him.

He found the school was very rough and old-fashioned. Most students only studied very old languages like Latin and Greek. Browning wanted to change this for everyone. He believed students should learn history and new languages too. He also wanted them to learn about modern ideas. He even started a special club for reading poetry and plays.

After Eton, Browning went to King's College in Cambridge.

He was a very successful student there. He graduated in 1860 and was very good at his studies. He then went back to Eton to work as a teacher. He wanted to make sure his students had better lives than he did. He grew his own house for students very quickly. He made a lot of money from the fees parents paid.

Browning was a very busy man with many different jobs.

He wrote many books about history and even a biography of George Eliot. He also tried to run for Parliament three different times. Some people at the school did not like his new ideas. They even let him go from his job in 1875. This happened because he did not always follow the school rules. He also had very close friendships that made other leaders uneasy.

Later in life, Browning did very important work for teachers.

He was the leader of the Cambridge University Day Training College. He served as the principal from 1891 until 1909. This work helped create the way teachers are trained today. After he retired, he moved to the beautiful city of Rome. He stayed there and kept writing until he died in 1923. He was given an award called an OBE for his help in education.
