This institution was a pioneer in professional training for teachers. His leadership helped shape what eventually became the university's Department of Education. Even though he was often overlooked for academic honors during his life, his work was foundational. He was eventually recognized as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to education.
In his later years, Browning moved to Rome. He remained an active writer until his death on October 6, 1923. During his time in Italy, he wrote two volumes of his autobiography. He also published a history of Italy. His life connects the traditional methods of the 19th century to the professional educational systems used today. He proved that one person's desire for reform can change how an entire institution functions.
