Osborne Reynolds was a famous scientist. He studied how liquids move. This study is called fluid dynamics.

He worked at a college in Manchester for his whole career.

Reynolds wanted to know how water flows through pipes. He did a famous test in 1883. He used a clear glass pipe. He put a small stream of dyed water in the middle.

When the water moved slowly, the dye stayed in a smooth line. This is called laminar flow. When he made the water move faster, the dye broke apart. It spread out through the whole pipe. This wild movement is called turbulent flow.

His work helped people build better ships. Ship builders can use small models to learn about big ships. They use his ideas to study how water rubs against a ship. This rubbing is called friction drag. Reynolds also studied how heat moves. He looked at how steam turns back into water. He even studied how tiny bits of sand or grain move. His math models are still used by scientists today.
