Osborne Reynolds was a brilliant thinker who changed how we see liquids. He was an expert in fluid dynamics. This is the study of how liquids and gases move.

His work helps us understand many things in our world. It helps engineers design better engines and machines. It even helps people build much better ships. Reynolds spent his whole career at Owens College in Manchester. This school is now called the University of Manchester.

Reynolds wanted to see how water changes when it moves. In 1883, he did a very famous experiment. He used a clear glass pipe to see inside. He added a small stream of dyed water to the center.

When the water moved slowly, the dye stayed in a straight, smooth line. This is called laminar flow. But when he sped up the water, the dye broke apart. It spread everywhere in the pipe. This messy movement is called turbulent flow.

Reynolds grew up with a love for how things work. His father was a mathematician and a teacher. His father even held patents for farm tools. Reynolds worked as an apprentice for a shipbuilder named Edward Hayes. This job gave him real experience with large boats. Later, he studied math at Queens' College in Cambridge. He graduated in 1867 as a top student. He then became a professor at the age of 25.

Many important groups honored his great work. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1877. He also won the Royal Medal in 1888 and 1903. Reynolds wrote about seventy different research reports. He even wrote a large book in 1903. This book was called The Sub-Mechanics of the Universe. He studied many topics like heat and how steam turns into water. He also looked at how tiny grains of sand move.

His ideas are still used by scientists every single day. One of his biggest ideas is the Reynolds number. This is a math tool used to compare different forces in a liquid. Ship designers use his rules to test small models. They can learn how a huge ship will act in the ocean. This helps them understand friction drag, which is how water rubs against a boat. Because of him, we can build much safer and faster machines.
