Sir Oliver Lodge was a famous English physicist and engineer.

He lived from 1851 to 1940 and did many important things. He studied how electricity and magnetism work together. This field is called electromagnetism. His work helped people learn how to send signals through the air. This discovery eventually led to the invention of the radio. He was a very busy man who taught at many different colleges.

Lodge found a way to send and catch electromagnetic waves. These are waves of energy that travel through space. He used a special tool called a coherer to catch these waves. A coherer is a glass tube filled with tiny metal bits. When a wave hits the tube, the metal bits stick together. This is called cohering. When they stick, electricity can flow through them. Lodge used a mirror and a beam of light to see these signals. He even used a bell to help break the metal bits apart.

Lodge grew up in Staffordshire, England. His father was a merchant who sold a type of blue clay. As a young boy, Lodge used an old building to do science experiments. He left school at age 14 to work in his father's business. Later, he went to the University of London to study. He earned two big science degrees there in 1875 and 1877. He later became a professor at University College Liverpool in 1881. He also led the University of Birmingham from 1900 to 1919.

In 1894, Lodge gave a famous lecture at the Royal Institution. He showed how radio waves act much like light. He could send these waves across a distance of 55 meters.

Lodge also worked on a way to pick specific waves. He called this syntonic tuning. He received a patent for this in 1898. This allowed people to tune into a specific frequency. A frequency is the speed at which a wave moves. This helped prevent different radio signals from getting mixed up.

Lodge's ideas helped change the world we live in today. His work on tuning was so important that the Marconi Company bought his patent. He also helped make car engines work better. He invented a part called a Lodge Igniter. This part uses a spark to help an engine run. His two sons even started a company called Lodge Plugs Ltd. because of his ideas. Lodge was a man who looked at the world with great curiosity. He wanted to understand the invisible forces all around us.
