Oryza sativa

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Asian cultivated rice is a very important food for many people. Scientists call this plant Oryza sativa. The name means "cultivated rice" in Latin. It belongs to the grass family called Poaceae. This plant is a model organism for studying cereal biology. This means scientists use it to learn how grains grow.

Rice plants have a very specific way they grow. They have an erect stalk that stands tall. The surface of this stem is smooth. The leaves are long and thin. These leaves grow from a part called a ligule.

The rice grain comes in many different colors. You can find white, brown, red, or black grains. Black rice actually turns purple when you cook it.

People have grown this rice for a very long time. It was first domesticated in the Yangtze River basin in China. This happened between 13,500 and 8,200 years ago. There are two main subspecies of this rice. One is called japonica, which has short and sticky grains. It was domesticated in the Yangtze Valley 6,000 to 9,000 years ago.

The other main group is called indica. This variety has long grains that are not sticky. It was domesticated near the Ganges 4,500 to 8,500 years ago. Most indica rice is grown in tropical Asia. It often grows submerged under water. There is also a third group called tropical japonica. This group has broad grains and grows in warm places.

Scientists study the rice genome to help crops grow better. The genome has 430 million base pairs across 12 chromosomes. They use special tools to find genes that stop diseases. For example, some genes help fight a fungus called rice blast. The plant uses hormones like salicylic acid to help its immunity. These tools help make rice that can survive hard jobs in nature.
