Organosulfur chemistry

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Organosulfur chemistry is the study of special compounds that contain sulfur. Sulfur is a very important part of life on Earth. It is found in two of the 20 common amino acids, which are cysteine and methionine. Many medicines also use sulfur, such as the antibiotic penicillin and sulfa drugs. While these medicines save many lives, sulfur can also be used for harm. For example, sulfur mustard is a deadly chemical used in warfare.

Scientists look at how sulfur atoms bond to other elements like carbon. Sulfur atoms are larger than carbon atoms. Because they are larger, the bonds between sulfur and carbon are longer. These bonds are also about 10% weaker than carbon-to-carbon bonds. For instance, a single bond in methanethiol is 183 pm long. In thiophene, the bond is 173 pm long. Understanding these strengths helps scientists predict how molecules will act.

Researchers have studied these structures for a long time. They use special tests to find sulfur, like the Carius halogen method. Scientists also study how sulfur groups change during chemical reactions. One way to make sulfides is through the alkylation of thiols. Another way is the Ferrario reaction. In this reaction, phenyl ether turns into phenoxathiin using elemental sulfur and aluminium chloride.

There are many different types of these compounds. Sulfides are common and often have a strong smell. Thiols are similar to alcohols but act very differently. Some sulfur groups are used in nanotechnology to form layers on gold. Disulfides are also very important for making things strong. In biology, they help proteins fold correctly. In industry, they are used for the crosslinking of rubber.

You can find organosulfur compounds in many everyday things. Fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, and natural gas all contain them. Oil refineries must work hard to remove sulfur from these fuels. You can also taste sulfur in your food. Isothiocyanates give a sharp flavor to wasabi, mustard, and radishes. Even Brussels sprouts and capers have these compounds. These tiny molecules make our world much more interesting.
