Sulfur is a fascinating chemical element found all over our universe.

It is the tenth most common element by mass in space. On our own planet, it is the fifth most common element. In its pure form, sulfur looks like a bright, lemon-yellow solid.

When you burn it, the sulfur melts into a deep red liquid. It even produces a bright blue flame while it burns. This element is vital for many things we see every day.

At a tiny level, sulfur atoms like to group together in special shapes.

Most of the time, eight sulfur atoms form a ring called octasulfur. This ring shape is a specific type of molecule. Sulfur can also form long chains called polymers. If you cool melted sulfur very quickly, it becomes a stretchy, brownish substance. This is called plastic sulfur, and it feels like crude rubber. It eventually changes back into a hard crystal after a few days.

People have known about sulfur for a very long time.

In ancient times, people in India, Greece, China, and Egypt used it. In old books, it is often called brimstone. This name means "burning stone." Today, we get most of our sulfur as a byproduct. We find it when we remove contaminants from natural gas and petroleum.

This helps us turn waste into something useful.

Sulfur is used in many different ways in our world.

Its biggest use is making sulfuric acid. This acid helps create fertilizers for plants. Sulfur is also used to make matches and insecticides to protect crops. You can even find it in some medicines. Some sulfur compounds have very strong smells. For example, hydrogen sulfide smells like rotten eggs. Other sulfur parts create the scent of garlic or grapefruit.

Life itself could not exist without this special element.

Sulfur is an essential part of all living things. It is found in important vitamins like biotin and thiamine. It also helps build proteins called amino acids. In your body, sulfur helps make your hair, skin, and feathers strong. These parts use special bonds called disulfides to stay tough. Without sulfur, the building blocks of life would not work correctly.
