Sulfuric acid is a very important liquid in our world.

It is a clear, oily liquid with no smell. You might know it by its other name, oil of vitriol. This acid is made of three elements: sulfur, oxygen, and hydrogen. It is very useful in many different jobs. For example, it helps make fertilizer for farms. It is also used to make oil and treat wastewater.

Because it is so helpful, many industries rely on it every day.

This acid works in a very special way. It is hygroscopic, which means it loves to pull water from the air. Because of this, you will not find pure sulfuric acid in nature. It is also a strong dehydrating agent. This means it can pull water out of other things. If you pour it on sugar, the sugar turns into black carbon.

It can even burn through paper or cotton. When you mix the acid with water, it releases a lot of heat. You must always add the acid to the water very slowly. If you do it the wrong way, the liquid might boil and spray.

People have used this substance for a very long time. In the past, people called it oil of vitriol. There are many ways to make it today. One way is called the contact process. Another way is the wet sulfuric acid process. There is also the lead chamber process. This older method used lead chambers to make the acid.

While those old methods are mostly gone now, they helped us learn how to make the acid we use today.

There are many different strengths of this acid. Most of the time, we use concentrated sulfuric acid. This version is about 98.3% acid. This specific strength is very stable to keep in storage.

Other types are much thinner. Battery acid is a type of diluted acid used in lead-acid batteries. It has a concentration between 29% and 32%. There is also a version called "chamber acid" that is less than 70% acid. Scientists use these different levels for different tasks.

Sulfuric acid connects to many things you see every day. You might find it inside a car battery to help it work. It is also a common ingredient in drain cleaners used at home.

Even in nature, it plays a role. It can form in acid rain when sulfur dioxide from fuels meets water. It can also come from minerals like pyrite in mines. This can turn river water a bright color.
