Many things we use have sulfur in them. Fossil fuels like coal and oil contain sulfur. Oil refineries work to remove it. Sulfur is also in foods. Isothiocyanates are compounds that give flavor to plants. You can taste them in mustard, radish, and wasabi.

Scientists study how sulfur bonds to other parts. Sulfur atoms are larger than carbon atoms. This makes the bonds between them longer and weaker. Some sulfur parts are used to make rubber strong. This is called crosslinking. Other sulfur parts help move signals in living bodies. This helps things like blood vessels work right.
