Thiol

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Thiols are special types of molecules. They are made of sulfur and other parts. Many thiols have very strong smells. Some smell like garlic or cabbage. Others smell like rotten eggs. Even skunk spray is made of thiols.

We can use these smells to stay safe. Natural gas has no smell on its own. This can be dangerous if it leaks. To help, people add thiols to the gas. This way, we can smell a leak right away.

Not all thiols smell bad. Some can smell very good! One type helps make the aroma of roasted coffee. Another type gives grapefruit its scent.

Thiols are like alcohols. In an alcohol, there is an oxygen part. In a thiol, sulfur takes the place of that oxygen. This part is called a sulfhydryl group. Because sulfur atoms are larger than oxygen, the bonds in thiols are longer. This makes them act differently than alcohols.
