The name comes from two Greek words. One word means "eye" and the other means "measure." This is a great way to describe the job. Optometrists look for vision defects in a person's eyes. They also find eye abnormalities or sicknesses. They can prescribe corrective lenses like glasses or contacts. This helps people see the world much more clearly.

Checking eyes involves many careful steps. First, a doctor might use a slit lamp. This is a microscope with a bright light.

It helps them look closely at the eye. They might also use a retinal camera. This tool takes pictures of the back of the eye. Another tool is called OCT, which stands for optical coherence tomography. This machine helps doctors see the structures of the eye. It is very helpful for treating things like glaucoma.

People have studied vision for hundreds of years. In the 1200s, Roger Bacon wrote about using lenses. By the year 1300, people made spectacles in Italy and Germany. A monk named Rivalto wrote about eyeglasses in 1305. In 1692, William Molyneux wrote about problems with close-up vision. Later, Johannes Kepler discovered how the retina makes vision. The retina is the part of the eye that sees.

Training for eye doctors is very important. In the United States, optometrists earn a four-year Doctor of Optometry degree. This is a post-baccalaureate degree. In the United Kingdom, they can also prescribe medicine. Some countries only require certificate training. In Sudan, the Faculty of Optometry and Visual Sciences is very important. It was the first of its kind in Africa and the Middle East. It was originally started as the Institute of Optometry in 1954.

Optometry connects to many parts of science. It uses optics, which is the study of light. It also uses vision science and biology. These fields help us understand how we see. Optometrists work with many other health experts. They also work with government groups to keep people safe. This job helps everyone in the community see better. It is a way to use science to help people every day.
