The One-Child Policy was a major plan for China. It aimed to slow down how fast the population grew. This policy was used between 1979 and 2015.

Leaders were worried about the number of people in the country. They feared too many people would use up all the food and resources. This worry started after a very hard time called the Great Chinese Famine. During that famine, about 30 million people died. Because of this, the government wanted to prevent future food shortages.

To make the plan work, the government used many different tools. They set up groups like the National Population and Family Planning Commission. These groups worked at national, provincial, and local levels.

They used propaganda campaigns to teach people about the new rules. These campaigns used posters and slogans to encourage families to follow the plan. The rules were not the same for everyone. Some people had to follow them more strictly than others. Families who broke the rules often had to pay large fines. In some very hard cases, women were forced to use birth control or undergo abortions.

Many people helped shape this big decision. In 1979, a leader named Chen Yun first proposed the policy. Other leaders like Deng Xiaoping also supported the idea.

An engineer named Song Jian was also very important. He participated in a meeting in Chengdu in 1980. Song believed the ideal population for China was 700 million people. He thought a one-child rule was the only way to reach that goal. The government officially made the policy a temporary measure on September 18, 1980. By 1982, the rule was even written into the country's constitution.

There were many different rules and exceptions over the years. In 1984, only about 35.4% of the population had to follow the strict limit. In the mid-1980s, rural parents could have a second child if the first was a girl. Some ethnic minority groups also had different rules.

The policy changed the balance of men and women in China. Because many families preferred having sons, many baby girls were abandoned. This created a generation of "missing women."

However, the policy also helped some women join the workforce more easily. Some girls also received more help with their education.

The rules in China have changed a lot recently. In 2015, the government allowed families to have two children. In May 2021, they raised the limit to three children.

By July 2021, the government removed all limits on how many children people could have. Now, they use financial rewards to encourage people to have more children. This is a big shift from the years of strict limits. The history of the One-Child Policy shows how much a government can change daily life. It is a story of how leaders try to plan for the future of a whole nation.
