Education in China is a huge system managed by the state. The government uses a national budget to pay for it. All citizens must attend school for at least nine years. This is known as nine-year compulsory education. It starts with six years of elementary school. Most children begin this journey at age six. They finish elementary school when they are twelve.

After elementary school, students enter middle school for three years. Some graduates then choose to go to high school. Others might go to a vocational school to learn specific skills. In 2020, 34.4 million new students entered compulsory education. This brought the total number of students to 156 million. Higher education has also changed a lot over time. In 1985, the government stopped using taxes to pay for all university costs. Now, students must compete for scholarships based on their grades.

History shows how much the system has grown. In 1949, the literacy rate was only between 20 and 40 percent. This means many people could not read or write. The government started many campaigns to help people learn. During the first sixteen years, elementary school enrollment tripled. College enrollment even grew by more than four times. By 1986, the government set a high priority on science and technology. They wanted to use education to help the country modernize.
