Old Chosŏn was the very first kingdom on the Korean Peninsula.

It was a very important state in history. This kingdom helped lead the way to later, more organized states. People often call it Gojoseon to show it is the ancient version. This helps distinguish it from the Joseon dynasty of 1392 AD. Understanding this kingdom helps us see how Korean culture began. It was a major part of how people lived long ago.

Many legends tell the story of how the kingdom started. One famous myth says a king named Tan'gun founded it in 2333 BC.

The story says Hwanung, a heavenly prince, came to Baekdu Mountain. A bear and a tiger wanted to become human beings. Hwanung told them to live in a cave for 100 days. They had to eat only garlic and mugwort to succeed. The tiger gave up, but the bear became a woman named Ungnyeo. She married Hwanung and gave birth to Tan'gun.

Other stories focus on different leaders and migrations. Some sources say a man named Gija arrived in 1122 BC. He came from the Shang dynasty in China. He is said to have started a group called Gija Joseon. This story suggests he brought high culture to the area. However, many modern experts debate if Gija was actually real. They look at old records and find no certain proof. This remains a big topic of study for historians today.

Changes in leadership happened many times over the years. In 195 BC, a man named Wi Man took control.

He was a refugee from a place called Yan. He established Wiman Joseon and ruled from Wanggeom. Wanggeom is the site of modern Pyongyang. Later, in 108 BC, the Han dynasty invaded the land. The Han emperor Wu conquered the kingdom and set up commanderies. This was a major shift in how the land was ruled.

Old Chosŏn's history connects to many things we know today. The founding of the kingdom is a very proud moment.
