Some parts of the land are very high. The mountains in the southwest reach 1,450 meters. In the northeast, the land is wild and comes from volcanoes. You can even find active mud volcanoes near the town of Oesilo. About 30% of the region is covered in woods and forests.

Oecusse has a very long and interesting history. It is often called the cradle of Timor-Leste. This is because the Portuguese first landed here in 1515.

They came to the area to trade for sandalwood. This was a very precious wood. For a long time, the Ambeno kingdom ruled this territory. Later, the area became a colony of Portugal. The name Oecusse might come from the local language. One idea is that it means "water pot."

Many different people and groups have lived here over the years. In the 1650s, a group called the Topasses arrived. They were a Eurasian population that became very strong. They even controlled much of Timor for a time. Later, the borders were changed by treaties between Portugal and the Netherlands. In 1859, the island was divided between these two powers. This left Oecusse surrounded by Dutch land. During World War II, the area was occupied by Japan.
