To do this, they use a nutrient management plan. This is a special tool. It helps them use plant food, called nutrients, in the best way. A good plan helps crops grow strong. It also helps the farm make more money. Most importantly, it protects our water and air.

A plan uses many parts. First, farmers make a field map. They look at soil types and nearby streams. Next, they use soil tests. These tests show what nutrients are already in the dirt. They also look at the crop sequence. This means they check what grew in the field last year. Some plants, like legumes, add nitrogen to the soil.

Farmers follow the 4R rules to be smart. This means using the right source, rate, time, and place. They must pick the right time to add food. They also pick the best way to put it in the ground. They might spray it on top or inject it into the soil. This keeps the food from washing away in the rain. This careful work helps the whole planet.
