Nutrient

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

All living things need nutrients to survive.

Nutrients help animals, plants, and fungi grow. They also help life make new life. Some nutrients give us power to move. Others help make parts like hair or scales.

We can split nutrients into two main groups. The first group is called macronutrients. We need these in large amounts. They include carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Carbohydrates come from sugars. Proteins are made of smaller parts called amino acids. Fats help keep our body temperature stable.

The second group is called micronutrients. We only need these in tiny amounts. This group includes vitamins and minerals. Minerals come from the Earth. Plants take them from the soil. Vitamins are organic molecules that help our bodies work.

If we do not get enough nutrients, we can get sick. This is called a deficiency. Even water is a vital part of what we need. Every living thing needs water to stay healthy.
