geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Northern Hungary is a significant statistical region located in the north-eastern part of Hungary. It encompasses the counties of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Heves, and Nógrád. In common speech, people often include Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county in this area as well. The region shares a northern border with Slovakia. To the south-east, it meets the Northern Great Plain region. The central region of Hungary lies to the south-west. Miskolc serves as the region's capital, largest city, and central hub.

The economy of the region shows a distinct industrial character. Miskolc has a long history of heavy industry. This history began as far back as the 18th century. The city became known for its steelworking and machine industry sectors. However, the region faces certain economic challenges compared to other areas. The GDP per capita (PPS) in Northern Hungary is €13,700. This is much lower than Central Hungary, which has a GDP per capita (PPS) of €31,100. The Human Development Index (HDI) also shows this gap. Northern Hungary has an HDI of 0.811, while Central Hungary reaches 0.922.

Cultural identity in the region is tied to the Palóc people. They speak a specific version of Hungarian called the Palóc dialect. The town of Balassagyarmat was once called the "capital city of Palóc country" by the author Kálmán Mikszáth. Traditional Palóc architecture can still be seen in the town of Hollókő. This town is also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This status highlights the unique cultural and historical value of the area. The region is home to many important towns like Eger, Salgótarján, and Ózd. Other notable towns include Kazincbarcika, Mezőkövesd, Sárospatak, Sátoraljaújhely, Tiszaújváros, Tokaj, Gyöngyös, Szerencs, Hatvan, and Balassagyarmat.

History is preserved through many impressive castles. You can visit the Castle of Diósgyőr or the Castle of Füzér. The Castle of Sárospatak is another significant site. The Castle of Eger is particularly famous for its military history. In 1552, it successfully defended against Ottoman invaders during the Siege of Eger. This event inspired the writer Géza Gárdonyi. He wrote the book *Eclipse of the Crescent Moon* about these events. The region has also produced important historical figures. Lajos Kossuth was born in the village of Monok. He was a famous statesman and a leader in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848.

Nature and heritage are celebrated through three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The first is the Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. This is a transitional site located between Hungary and Slovakia. The second site is the town of Hollókő, known for its architecture. The third is the Tokaj wine region. This region is world-famous for producing Tokaji wine. These sites show the diverse landscapes and traditions found in the north. They draw visitors interested in geology, history, and local crafts.

Transportation connects the region to the rest of Europe. Major highways include the M30 and the M3. These roads link the area to the wider European highway network. Rail travel is also very efficient for passengers. InterCity trains arrive in Budapest every hour. There are also many freight and passenger trains for other destinations. Within the city of Miskolc, people use a variety of local systems. These include buses, trams, and a railway system.

Political life in the region follows broader national trends. Since the 2010 Hungarian parliamentary election, Northern Hungary has been a Fidesz stronghold. This is similar to much of rural Hungary. However, local politics in the capital can differ. The Municipal Assembly of Miskolc is currently controlled by an opposition coalition. This coalition stands against the Fidesz-KDNP political alliance. The current mayor of Miskolc is Pál Veres, who serves as an independent.
