It is categorized as both a NUTS 1 and a NUTS 2 region. This means it is part of a specific system used to organize European data. The region is one of eight such areas in the country. Since 2018, it no longer includes the capital city, Budapest, within its borders. However, the region remains a central hub for the nation's activity and identity.

The region is divided into several smaller administrative subregions. Each subregion has its own seat and a specific number of settlements. For example, the Aszód subregion has 9 settlements and a population of 35,451. The Ráckeve subregion is quite large, with 20 settlements and 141,756 people. Other notable subregions include Budaörs, Cegléd, Dabas, Dunakeszi, Érd, and Gödöllő. You will also find Gyál, Monor, Nagykáta, Pilisvörösvár, Szentendre, Szob, Vác, and Veresegyház. These areas create a complex network of towns and villages.

Demographically, Central Hungary has a diverse population. In 2021, the total population reached 1,325,036 people. The age structure shows that 65% of the population is between 15 and 64 years old. Children aged 0 to 14 make up 17% of the residents. Meanwhile, 18% of the population is aged 65 or older. This data helps researchers understand how the region's society is organized.

The economy in Central Hungary is the most developed in the country. It is also the richest region in Hungary. The unemployment rate, which is the percentage of people looking for work who cannot find it, has changed over time. In 2006, the rate was 5.1%. It rose to a peak of 9.5% in 2011. However, it dropped significantly to 2.7% by 2017. This 2017 figure was much lower than the national average of Hungary. It was also much lower than the average for all of Europe.

Tourism is a major part of the region's identity. Central Hungary is part of the Budapest Central Transdanubia Tourist Region. Budapest is a World Heritage Site, a title declared in 1987. This status includes the Danube Riverbank and Buda Castle. It also covers the Millennium Underground Railway and Heroes' Square. In the Buda side, visitors can see Gellért Hill and the ruins of Aquincum. The Pest side features the Hungarian Parliament Building and St. Stephen's Basilica. Many people visit the city for its famous hot spas and historic bridges. These bridges include the Széchenyi Chain Bridge and the Margaret Bridge.

Beyond the city, the region offers many historical and cultural landmarks. Gödöllő is known for its Royal Castle and Arboretum. Szentendre features a Baroque town square and an Ethnographic Open Air Museum. In Vác, you can find a cathedral and a triumphal arch. History is visible in many old churches. The church in Zsámbék dates back to the Middle Ages. The church in Fót is built in the Romantic style. You can also explore the Visegrád Castle or the Savoya Castle in Ráckeve.

Nature provides many different landscapes for exploration. The Pilis Mountains and the Visegrád Hills are popular for hiking. There is also the Ördögmalom waterfall for visitors to see. The region contains two national parks: Gödöllő National Park and Ócsa National Park. You can find unique environments like the Apaj plain and ancient juniper fields in Tatárszentgyörgy. For animal lovers, there is a bear sanctuary in Veresegyház. The area also supports traditional activities like equestrianism in Pusztavacs.
