This plain is the largest part of the wider Pannonian Plain. It covers about 56% of the modern territory of Hungary. This represents approximately 47,000 square kilometers of land. The plain is a vital geographic feature of Central Europe. It serves as a major landscape for agriculture and history.

The geography of the plain is defined by its surrounding borders. To the north and east, the Carpathians mountain range forms a boundary. In the southwest, the Transdanubian Mountains and the Dinaric Alps are located nearby. The Sava river marks the southern edge of the region. The terrain varies from very flat areas to rolling plains. The highest point in the plain is Hoportyó. The lowest point is the Tisza River. The Tisza is the most important river in the entire region.

The plain is divided into many distinct sub-regions within Hungary. These include the Mezőföld, Sárrét, and Sárköz. Other areas are the Drávamellék, Kiskunság, and Jászság. The Pest Plain, Heves Plain, and Borsodi-Mezőség are also parts of the region. Other sections include Bodrogköz, Tiszahát, Szatmár Plain, and the Körös-vidék. The Hortobágy National Park and Nyírség are also notable areas. The plain also extends into several neighboring countries. In Serbia, it includes Bačka, Banat, and Srem. In Slovakia, it is the Eastern Slovak Lowland. In Ukraine, it is the Transcarpathian Lowland. In Romania, it includes Banat and Crişana.

The history of the plain is a record of major cultural shifts. During the prehistoric era, it was a meeting point for Eastern and Western Europe. Agriculture began with the Early Neolithic Körös culture around 6000–5500 B.C.E. This was followed by the Linear Pottery culture, or LBK. The LBK became a dominant agricultural culture across Europe. Later, the Lengyel culture existed during the Late Neolithic period. During the Early Bronze Age, people traded metal ores through intercontinental networks. These cultures incorporated elements from the Near East and the Steppe.

Scientific studies have revealed much about the people of the past. In 2014, researchers published a major DNA study from ancient burials. The 5,000-year record showed significant genomic shifts. These shifts happened at the start of the Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron Ages. There were also periods of stability between these changes. The earliest Neolithic genomes were similar to European hunter-gatherers. There was no evidence of lactase persistence at that time. Iron Age samples showed eastern genomic influences. These samples also showed a transition toward lighter pigmentation.

The plain has also been a home for many nomadic groups. Its environment is similar to the Pontic–Caspian steppe. This made it a natural heartland for Eurasian nomads. The Huns, Avars, and Magyars all used the plain as a base. Other nomadic tribes included the Cumans and the Jasz people. These migrations shaped the cultural identity of the region. The landscape allowed for the movement of these large groups.

Today, the region is known for its culture and science. Many famous Hungarian writers were inspired by the plain. These include Sándor Petőfi, Gyula Juhász, Ferenc Móra, and Zsigmond Móricz. The area has also produced great scientists. János Irinyi invented the noiseless match. Zoltán Bay was a physicist. Other notable figures include János Kabay, Gábor Kátai, and Frigyes Korányi. The plain is also famous for medicinal baths. Towns like Debrecen, Gyula, and Hajdúszoboszló offer these services. Many cultural festivals also take place here. Examples include the Goulash Festival and the Flower Carnival.
