Slovakia, officially known as the Slovak Republic, is a landlocked nation located in Central Europe.

Being landlocked means the country has no direct coastline on an ocean. It is surrounded by several neighbors. Poland sits to the north, and Ukraine is to the east. To the south lies Hungary, while Austria is to the west. The Czech Republic is located to the northwest.

Much of the territory is mountainous. The capital and largest city is Bratislava. Košice serves as the second largest city. Currently, the population exceeds 5.4 million people.

Human history in this region began hundreds of thousands of years ago. The oldest surviving human artifacts date back to the Early Paleolithic era. These tools were made using the Clactonian technique near Nové Mesto nad Váhom. They date to approximately 270,000 BCE.

Archaeologists also discovered a Neanderthal cranium near the village of Gánovce. This find dates to about 200,000 BCE. During the Bronze Age, between 2000 and 800 BCE, the region saw significant economic growth. This prosperity came from the production of copper, especially in central and northwest Slovakia. The Lusatian people later expanded by building complex fortifications and administrative centers.

As time passed, different groups moved into and settled the land. From around 500 BCE, Celtic tribes settled the territory during the La Tène period. They built powerful settlements called oppida at Bratislava and Devín. The Biatecs were a group that minted silver coins with Latin inscriptions.

These coins represent the first known use of writing in the region. Later, the Roman Empire established outposts near the Danube River. They built military forts and civilian settlements like Gerulata.

One notable northern outpost was the winter camp of Laugaricio, located at modern-day Trenčín.

The migration of various tribes shaped the political landscape of the region. The Huns crossed the Danube in 377 CE. Later, the Avars established an empire in the Carpathian Basin. In the 5th and 6th centuries, the Slavs arrived in the territory. They played a major role in creating Samo's Empire in the 7th century. Following the decline of the Avar Khaganate, the Slavs established the Principality of Nitra. This was eventually annexed by the Principality of Moravia, which became Great Moravia. By the end of the 9th century, the territory was integrated into the Principality of Hungary.

Slovakia experienced many shifts in power through the centuries. After the Mongol invasion in 1241 and 1242, much of the land was destroyed. However, King Béla IV helped the territory recover. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the Ottoman Empire controlled southern portions of the land. These areas were eventually ceded to the Habsburgs by the 18th century. In 1848, the Slovak Uprising occurred following the Hungarian declaration of independence. Although it did not reach its goals, the uprising helped cement a Slovak national identity. This period of tension eventually led to the creation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The 20th century brought massive political changes to the nation. During World War I, the Czechoslovak National Council fought for independence. This led to the proclamation of Czechoslovakia in 1918.

In 1939, a first Slovak Republic was established as a client state of Nazi Germany. After the war ended in 1945, Czechoslovakia was re-established. Following a coup in 1948, the country became a communist state within the Eastern Bloc. This era included the Prague Spring in 1968, which was suppressed by a Warsaw Pact invasion.

In 1989, the Velvet Revolution peacefully ended communist rule.

Finally, on January 1, 1993, Slovakia became an independent democratic state. This peaceful split from Czechoslovakia is called the Velvet Divorce.
