He is best known for his series of comedy films produced between 1953 and 1966. In these films, he portrayed Norman Pitkin, an endearingly inept character. This character, often called "the Gump," became a symbol of lighthearted, physical comedy. Wisdom's work was highly successful at the British box office. His popularity extended to diverse global regions, including South America and Iran. He even gained fame in Albania, where his films were among the few Western productions permitted during the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha.

Wisdom's performance style was built on a unique blend of skills. He utilized slapstick, which is a type of physical comedy involving exaggerated falls and clumsy movements. He was also a highly accomplished musician with great versatility. His stage routines often included a comedic struggle to keep pace with a theater band. He would pretend to fail as the music changed keys. Suddenly, he would reveal his true virtuosity by playing the instruments perfectly. This combination of musical talent and comedic timing defined his professional persona, which he called "The Successful Failure."

To create his iconic look, Wisdom adopted a specific costume. He wore a tweed flat cap with the peak turned up at an angle. His suit was always at least two sizes too small. He completed the outfit with a crumpled collar and a mangled tie. This visual identity helped audiences immediately recognize his character. His comedy often featured the character in various manual labor roles. He might play a window cleaner, a milkman, or an apprentice butcher. These roles allowed him to showcase his talent for evoking sympathy through a character's perceived helplessness.

Wisdom's early life was marked by significant hardship and poverty. Born in London in 1915, he lived in a single room with his family. He experienced homelessness and worked difficult jobs as a child. At age 14, he joined the British Army as a band recruit. While stationed in Lucknow, India, he became a self-taught musician. He learned to play the piano, trumpet, saxophone, flute, drums, bugle, and clarinet. He also became the flyweight boxing champion of the British Army in India. These early experiences shaped his resilience and his diverse skill set.

His professional ascent was rapid and statistically significant. His first leading film role was in the 1953 movie *Trouble in Store*. This performance earned him a BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles. In 1954, he was ranked as the tenth biggest box-office star in Britain. His films were vital to the Rank Organisation, helping to provide financial stability. By 1955, he was named the sixth most popular British film star. Even as his film series ended in 1966, he was still voted the fifth most popular star at the British box office.

In his later career, Wisdom proved his range as a dramatic actor. He moved beyond simple comedy to perform on Broadway in New York City. He earned a Tony Award nomination for his role in the musical *Walking Happy*. In 1981, he received critical acclaim for a very different type of role. He played a terminally ill cancer patient in the television play *Going Gently*. This performance demonstrated his ability to handle serious, complex subject matter.

This transition showed that he was much more than just a slapstick comedian.

Wisdom's legacy connects to the broader history of 20th-century entertainment. He bridged the gap between traditional music hall variety acts and modern film stardom. His ability to appeal to international audiences helped globalize British comedy. He remains a significant figure for his ability to blend high musical skill with accessible, physical humor. His career spanned music, stage, television, and film, touching many different aspects of the performing arts.
