This was a satirical sketch series hosted by David Frost. On this show, Barker worked with John Cleese and Ronnie Corbett. Barker and Corbett eventually became long-time comedy partners. They achieved massive success with their sketch show, The Two Ronnies, from 1971 to 1987. Barker also starred in famous sitcoms like Porridge and Open All Hours. These roles made him a household name in Britain.

Barker was a highly respected writer of comedy material. However, he often used pseudonyms, which are fake names, to write his sketches. He frequently used the name "Gerald Wiley." He did this because he wanted his writing to be judged on its own merit. He did not want people to praise a sketch just because a famous star wrote it. This allowed him to test his talent without any pre-judgment. He continued using various pseudonyms throughout much of his career.

His contributions to entertainment earned him many prestigious honors. He won a BAFTA award for best light entertainment performance four times.
