Throughout his career, he has mastered various comedic styles. These include sketch comedy, which uses short, funny scenes. He also uses surreal humor, which is often strange or dreamlike. Additionally, he specializes in political and religious satire. This means he uses humor to critique powerful institutions or beliefs. He is also known for black comedy, a style that finds humor in serious or dark subjects. In a 2005 poll of fellow comedians, Cleese was ranked as the second best comedian ever.

Cleese's journey began with his education and his time at the University of Cambridge. He attended Clifton College, where he excelled in academics and sports like cricket and boxing. He passed eight O-Levels and three A-Levels in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Before entering university, he spent two years teaching science, English, geography, history, and Latin at his former preparatory school. He eventually studied law at Downing College, Cambridge. While there, he joined the Cambridge Footlights, a famous theatrical club. He famously joined the club because he could make people laugh. It was during this time that he met his long-term writing partner, Graham Chapman.

After graduating in 1963, Cleese began a series of successful projects. He worked on the Footlights Revue, titled *A Clump of Plinths*. This production was so successful it toured internationally, reaching New Zealand and Broadway. Cleese also worked on BBC Radio, specifically on the popular series *I'm Sorry, I'll Read That Again*. This program ran from 1965 to 1974. In the mid-1960s, he worked on *The Frost Report*. This show served as a crucial training ground for many future comedy stars. While working on this program, Cleese achieved a television breakthrough. He appeared in the "Class" sketch, where his height was used to create a comedic contrast with shorter actors.

Cleese often played two distinct types of characters in the troupe. He played the "sophisticate," such as pompous government officials or announcers. He also played the "loony," such as the character Mr. Praline, who famously argued about a dead Norwegian Blue parrot. Cleese and Chapman often wrote together in the same room. Cleese has noted that their partnership involved him doing much of the heavy writing work.

Beyond Monty Python, Cleese achieved massive success with the sitcom *Fawlty Towers*. He co-wrote the series with his first wife, Connie Booth. Cleese starred as the hotel owner, Basil Fawlty, a character known for his suppressed rage. For this role, he won the 1980 British Academy Television Award for Best Entertainment Performance. The show was highly regarded, topping the British Film Institute's list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes in 2000. Furthermore, a 2001 poll ranked his character, Basil, as the second greatest TV character ever.
