Nontheism

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some people have many different views about gods. They might not say if they believe in them. This is called nontheism.

Nontheism is a broad term. It covers many different ideas. It can include people who do not care about gods. It can also include people who stay silent on the topic. This is different from atheism. An atheist says that gods do not exist. A nontheist may just not talk about it.

Many groups fit under this name. Some are religions. Buddhism and Jainism are examples. Taoism is another one. Even some groups like the Quakers use this term.

Some thinkers have different ways of looking at this. One thinker, Anthony Kenny, talks about agnosticism. This is when people are not sure if a god exists. He also mentions people who think the word "God" has no meaning. George Holyoake used the term in 1852. The term became more common in the 1990s. People used it when they did not want to use the word atheism. It helps describe many ways to think about the world.
