He lived during the Renaissance, a time of great discovery. For a long time, people believed Earth sat at the center of the universe. Copernicus changed this by creating a new model. He placed the Sun at the center instead of the Earth. This idea started the Copernican Revolution. It was a huge step toward modern science.

His new way of looking at the sky worked by fixing old mistakes. He studied the ideas of two thinkers named Aristotle and Ptolemy. These men had different ways of explaining how stars and planets moved. Copernicus looked at their math and found logical contradictions. These are mistakes where two ideas do not fit together. By solving these problems, he built his own system. He showed that the planets move around the Sun. This was a much better way to describe the heavens.
