Before she became a star on television, Nichols worked hard in many different ways. She grew up in Robbins, Illinois, near Chicago. She began studying dance at the Chicago Ballet Academy when she was only 12 years old. Later, she traveled across the United States and Canada as a singer. She performed with famous musical bands led by Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton. She also appeared in films and on many different theater stages. These early years helped her build the skills she needed for her big break.

Nichols' journey to stardom included a very important moment in her life. During the first season of Star Trek, she almost left the show for a job on Broadway. However, a meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed her mind. He told her that her role was a vital model for others. He compared her work to the civil rights movement happening at that time. Because of his words, she decided to stay with the series. This choice allowed her to continue inspiring people for many years.

Her career reached many different places and people. She appeared in six Star Trek films, including Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 1991. She also released two music albums, such as Out of This World in 1991. Nichols even voiced characters in animated shows like The Simpsons and Futurama. In 2017, she received a Daytime Emmy nomination for her work on The Young and the Restless. She proved she could succeed in movies, music, and television all at once.

Beyond acting, Nichols used her fame to help NASA reach for the stars.
