It mostly refers to the lands in the Americas. Long ago, people in Europe only knew about three continents. They called Africa, Asia, and Europe the "Old World." This changed during the Age of Discovery in the early 1500s. Explorers began to find lands west of the Atlantic Ocean. These new places expanded what people thought the world looked like.

How did people realize these lands were new? An Italian explorer named Amerigo Vespucci helped explain it. In 1503, he wrote a famous letter called "Mundus Novus."

He had traveled to Brazil in August 1501. He noticed the people and nature were not like Asia. He thought the land was full of many animals. He also felt the weather was very pleasant there. His letter became a huge sensation across Europe.

Many people helped name these new places. An Italian named Peter Martyr also used new terms. He called the area the "New Globe" or "New Hemisphere." He wrote about these discoveries in his history books. Even Christopher Columbus had different ideas about the land. He thought he had reached the edges of Asia. He did not believe he found a new continent.

History shows that people did not agree right away. In 1505 and 1508, leaders held big meetings in Spain. They wanted to study all the new information. Amerigo Vespucci even attended these meetings in Toro and Burgos. They decided the lands were not the Indies. Instead, they wanted to find a path to Asia through the Americas.

Maps began to change as more was learned. The 1529 Padrón Real map shows much of the new coastline.

Today, the term "New World" has a few different meanings. Most people use it to talk about the Western Hemisphere. In the United States, it can also mean the country itself. This is because the U.S. was once part of British America. It became independent after the American Revolutionary War. The name reminds us of a time when the map was growing. It shows how much our view of Earth has changed.
